Leading researcher on the mental health and well-being of transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse individuals, and how psychotherapy can better serve these communities.
Dr. Stephanie Budge is a Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research program is dedicated to understanding and improving the mental health of transgender, Two-Spirit, nonbinary, and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. She examines the psychological processes that promote resilience and well-being in these communities, with particular attention to coping, identity development, and the role of social support.
She has published widely on affirmative psychotherapy approaches for gender diverse clients, and her work has directly informed clinical guidelines and training programs for therapists working with TGD populations. Dr. Budge is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and has received numerous awards for her contributions to LGBTQ+ mental health research. Her scholarship challenges mental health professionals to move beyond compliance toward genuine companionship and solidarity with gender diverse clients.
