Former APA President and the field's foremost scholar on the psychology of men and masculinities — including how traditional masculinity ideology shapes men's emotional lives.
Dr. Ron Levant is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Akron and a past president of the American Psychological Association (2005). He is widely recognized as one of the founding figures of the psychology of men and masculinities — an area he helped establish as a rigorous, empirically grounded specialty within clinical and counseling psychology. His concept of normative male alexithymia — the emotional inexpressiveness that traditional masculine socialization produces in many men — has been enormously influential in both research and clinical practice.
Dr. Levant has authored or co-authored 19 books and more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, and has developed assessment tools for measuring masculinity ideology that are used in research worldwide. During his APA presidency he launched an initiative to increase the representation of evidence-based practices in psychology. His work has opened important conversations about how men experience distress, why they often avoid seeking help, and what therapists need to understand to engage them effectively.
