One of the world's foremost authorities on perfectionism — including its multidimensional nature, its role in psychopathology, and its treatment.
Dr. Paul Hewitt is a Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia and one of the world's leading researchers on perfectionism. His work has fundamentally shaped how the field understands perfectionism as a multidimensional construct — not just high personal standards, but also the demanding expectations people impose on others and the sense that others demand perfection from them. This three-part model has generated an enormous body of research linking perfectionism to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicidal tendencies.
Dr. Hewitt has developed widely used measures of perfectionism and has published extensively on its clinical implications, including how perfectionism operates within the therapy relationship and what kinds of interventions are most effective. He leads the Perfectionism and Psychopathology Lab at UBC and has trained numerous graduate students and clinicians. His research has been recognized with multiple national and international awards for its scientific and clinical impact.
