Psychotherapy researcher who developed the context-responsive psychotherapy integration framework — a science-based approach to matching therapy to the individual patient.
Dr. Michael J. Constantino is a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the director of the Psychotherapy Research Lab. He is the primary architect of the context-responsive psychotherapy integration framework, which provides a principled, evidence-based method for tailoring treatment to each patient's unique presentation, preferences, and context — without abandoning the rigor of structured, evidence-based care.
Dr. Constantino has published more than 215 articles and chapters on psychotherapy process and outcome, patient-therapist matching, expectation and alliance formation, and the mechanisms of therapeutic change. His work bridges research and practice, offering clinicians practical tools for personalizing care while maintaining accountability to the evidence base. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and has received sustained funding from NIH and other national agencies for his research program.
