About Dr. Katie Aafjes-van Doorn

Dr. Katie Aafjes-van Doorn is an Associate Professor of Psychology at NYU Shanghai. She completed her MSc in Clinical Psychology and her Doctorate at the University of Oxford, and has since built an international research program focused on psychotherapy process and outcome. She is especially interested in how therapists adapt their work to individual clients — a concept known as responsiveness — and what that responsiveness means for treatment effectiveness.

Her research on teletherapy has been particularly influential, providing some of the most rigorous evidence to date on whether online psychotherapy is comparably effective to in-person treatment. She has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and has collaborated with researchers across Europe and North America. Her work bridges clinical practice and empirical research, helping therapists make better-informed decisions about how and when to adapt their approach.
