Eating disorder researcher focused on motivation, readiness to change, and self-compassion as pathways to recovery.
Dr. Josie Geller is a psychologist and Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia's Department of Psychiatry, and Director of Research for the Eating Disorders Program at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. Her research is focused on understanding and improving treatment outcomes for individuals with eating disorders, with a particular emphasis on client motivation, readiness to change, and the therapeutic relationship.
She developed the Short Treatment Allocation Tool for Eating Disorders (STADE) and has contributed substantially to research on how to match treatment intensity to client readiness. Dr. Geller's work on self-compassion in eating disorder recovery has broken important new ground, suggesting that the way clients relate to themselves — with kindness rather than self-criticism — may be as important as any specific therapeutic technique. She has published widely, received major research funding, and trained numerous clinicians in her approaches.
