About Dr. Jill Harkavy-Friedman

Dr. Jill Harkavy-Friedman is the Senior Vice President of Research at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), the largest private funder of suicide research in the United States. With more than 35 years as both a clinician and researcher, she has been at the center of the effort to translate suicide science into prevention programs, professional education, and public awareness campaigns that actually reach people at risk.

She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles on suicide risk, protective factors, and intervention approaches, and has been a consistent voice for evidence-based practice in suicide prevention. Dr. Harkavy-Friedman is also deeply committed to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and suicidality — a theme that runs through her research, her advocacy, and her public-facing work. Her career reflects a conviction that the science of suicide is ultimately in service of keeping people alive.
