Pioneer of obesity science and co-founder of the National Weight Control Registry — the largest ongoing study of successful long-term weight loss maintenance.
Dr. James O. Hill is a Professor of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and one of the world's leading researchers on the science of obesity, energy balance, and weight management. Over more than four decades of research, he has made foundational contributions to understanding why people gain weight, why long-term weight loss is so difficult, and what distinguishes the rare individuals who succeed.
He co-founded the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) — the largest ongoing longitudinal study of individuals who have maintained significant weight loss — and has used NWCR data to identify the behavioral strategies that separate successful maintainers from those who regain. Dr. Hill has published more than 650 peer-reviewed papers and has been deeply involved in national obesity policy. His more recent work on GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic explores how these medications interact with behavioral approaches, representing some of the most timely research in contemporary obesity science.
